Bite uses a few mechanisms to control the frequency and length of time a menu is displayed for a guest to interact with, or available for the POS to process orders for. These mechanisms are:
- Open Hours
- Open Hour Overrides
- Day Parts
Each of these mechanisms plays a different, but still pivotal, role in determining which menu is active at a given point in time throughout a store's business day.
Let's dive in.
Open Hours
Open Hours may be thought of as "specific times the location's POS will accept orders for the specified dining options (these vary by customer)."
In the above screenshot, each dining option is configured to start, and end, at different times throughout the day. The POS will not validate orders for "dine in" prior to 8:00am, or past 9:15pm, for any day of the week. The POS will validate orders for "to go" Monday through Thursday, as well as Sunday, only between the hours of 11:00am to 9:00pm, and for an additional 30 minutes on Friday and Saturday.
- The "Pickup" dining option may not be used at some locations. It is included in this screenshot, but should not be considered unless the customer utilizes this dining option.
Open Hour Overrides
Open Hour Overrides are a mechanism to modify the location's specified Open Hours, without making a permanent modification to the standard times that will need to be reverted later.
Open Hour Overrides may extend the start, or end, times of the dining options they're configured for. They may also be used to mark dining options as completely inactive for an entire day, or simply for a subset of time.
In the screenshot above, two overrides exist for the same day: January 8th, 2025, which was a Wednesday. The first override is extending the time the POS will validate "to go" orders earlier by 6 hours AS WELL AS later by an hour. The second override is prohibiting the POS from validating "dine in" orders for the entirety of the day.
Day Parts
Day Parts are the final piece of the puzzle. There may be any amount of Day Parts configured for a single location. Once created, Day Parts may then be assigned to specific menus, menu sections, or items thus refining when those components are displayed in the kiosk menu that's presented to guests.
In the screenshot above, the only Day Part that has been created is configured for 5:15am - 12:00am. When this Day Part is assigned to a menu, that menu will be actively displayed on the kiosk during the specified times. However, this does not mean a guest is able to order the desired item, or from the desired menu section. The POS will still only validate orders within the Open Hours for that day, taking into consideration any Open Hour Overrides that may be in place.
Examples
Scenario 1
- Open Hours: Dine In, Monday through Sunday - 8am to 8pm.
- Open Hour Override: Dine In, Open on Monday from 7am to 7pm.
- Day Parts: All Day Cookin', Monday through Sunday - 8am to 8pm.
- Menu: Good All-Day Food
- Day Part Assigned To Menu: All Day Cookin'
In this scenario, the POS is validating orders for "dine in" from 8am - 8pm, every day. On the upcoming Monday, the location needs to shift their open hours back by one hour at the start, as well as the end.
Outcome:
The menu will NOT display properly from 7am - 8am and instead will display a message stating, "Sorry, we're closed." From 8am - 7pm, everything will function properly. From 7pm - 8pm, the menu will continue to display, but orders will not pass validation.
Reasons:
The Day Part is still configured to be 8am - 8pm. This means the menu won't display until 8am. The Open Hour Override will not allow orders to validate past 7pm.
Resolution:
The Day Part will need to be adjusted to align with the Open Hour Override that's in place.
Scenario 2
- Open Hours: Dine In, Monday through Sunday - 8am to 8pm.
- Open Hour Override: Dine In, Open on Monday from 7am to 9pm.
- Day Parts: All Day Cookin' - NEW, Monday through Sunday - 7am to 8pm.
- Menu: Good All-Day Food
- Day Part Assigned To Menu: All Day Cookin'
In this scenario, the POS is validating orders for "dine in" from 8am - 8pm, every day. On the upcoming Monday, the location needs to extend their open hours by one hour at the start, as well as the end.
Outcome:
The menu will be displayed starting at 7am and orders will pass validation. The menu will NOT be displayed from 8pm - 9pm and instead will display a message stating, "Sorry, we're closed."
Reason:
The Day Part does not extend to meet the end time of the Open Hour override.
Resolution:
The Day Part will need to be extended by an hour to accommodate for the change in Open Hours due to the Open Hour Override that's in place.
Scenario 3
- Open Hours: Dine In, Monday through Sunday - 8am to 8pm.
- Open Hour Override: Dine In, Closed on Monday from 11am to 1pm.
On the upcoming Monday, the location needs to shut down "dine in" for a couple of hours due to a private event.
Outcome:
The kiosk will be display the menu all day, but orders will pass validation until 11am. From 11am - 1pm, the kiosk will still display the menu but the POS will NOT validate any "dine in" orders during this time. From 1pm - 8pm, the kiosk will continue to display the menu and orders will again pass validation until 8pm.
Reason:
The start times for both the Day Parts and Open Hours are aligned. The Open Hour Override will force the POS to not validate "dine in" orders from 11am - 1pm. Once the Open Hour Override has reached its end time, the "dine in" the POS will resume validating orders until 8pm.
Resolution:
None. This is configured correctly and should not cause any issues.
