Overview
Elo Android kiosks with both a hardwired Ethernet connection and a previously saved Wi-Fi network may intermittently drop connectivity. The root cause is the device defaulting to an unstable saved Wi-Fi network (often a guest network) instead of the stable Ethernet connection, particularly during reboots.
This article covers how to identify and resolve this issue by removing saved Wi-Fi networks from the Elo device's Android settings.
Symptoms
- Kiosk experiences intermittent connection drops or goes offline unpredictably
- Connectivity issues occur most often after device reboots
- Kiosk is physically connected to Ethernet (LAN) but still loses connection
- Disabling Wi-Fi via EloView does not persist — Wi-Fi re-enables after reboot
Root Cause
The Elo device has a previously saved Wi-Fi network stored in its Android settings. On boot, the device attempts to connect to this saved Wi-Fi network instead of (or in addition to) the hardwired Ethernet connection. If the saved Wi-Fi network is unstable (e.g., a guest network), this causes intermittent drops.
Key detail: Simply toggling Wi-Fi off in EloView is not a permanent fix. The Wi-Fi setting can revert on reboot. The saved network itself must be removed ("forgotten") from the device's Android settings.
Resolution Steps
⚠️ These steps require someone physically on-site with access to the Elo device.
Step 1: Access Android Settings on the Elo Device
Press the two buttons on the back panel of the Elo device to enter the Elo settings menu, then navigate into Android Settings. Alternatively, enabling the “Multi-app Mode” configuration in Eloview effectively has the same result as pushing the buttons on the back of the device. This may be useful if the individual interacting with the kiosk is unable to access the buttons on the back.
⚠️ If enabling the “Multi-app Mode” configuration in Eloview, please be aware that it must be disabled after the changes have been made. Additionally, once this configuration has been enabled, the “Home Button” & “Android Nav Bar” configurations automatically enable and must be manually disabled separately from the “Multi-app Mode” configuration.
If prompted for an admin password, try the following:
Bite(capital B)bite(lowercase)1Elo1elo
Step 2: Navigate to Wi-Fi Settings
Once in Android Settings, go to Network & Internet → Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Forget Saved Wi-Fi Networks
Tap on any saved Wi-Fi network and select Forget. Repeat for all saved networks on the device.
Step 4: Verify Ethernet Connectivity
After removing all saved Wi-Fi networks, confirm that the kiosk is connected via Ethernet and that the Bite application is online and functioning normally.
Step 5: Repeat for All Affected Kiosks
Check all kiosks at the location — even ones not currently experiencing issues — and remove any saved Wi-Fi networks as a preventive measure.
What Doesn't Work
- Disabling Wi-Fi via EloView: This is a temporary toggle that can revert on reboot. It does not remove the saved network.
- Toggling Wi-Fi off in Android Settings without forgetting the network: The device may still attempt to auto-reconnect to the saved network after a reboot.
