Overview
Day Parts and Open Hours are separate configurations that control different aspects of the customer ordering experience.
Although both are related to time-based availability, they serve different purposes:
- Day Parts control the Kiosk's availability and determine which menu is displayed based on the time of day.
- Open Hours control whether an order can be validated and processed.
- Sync Open Hours From Google allows Open Hours to be automatically synchronized using the business hours configured in Google.
- For OLO-integrated sites, Open Hours are controlled by OLO and cannot be manually configured in Bite Admin.
Understanding the difference between these settings is important when troubleshooting situations where a Kiosk appears to be open but customers are unable to place orders.
Day Parts
Day Parts define the days and times when a Kiosk should be available to customers.
They can also determine which menu is displayed during a specific time period.
For example, a store may have:
- Breakfast: 6:00 AM – 10:30 AM
- Lunch: 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM
- Dinner: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Based on the configured Day Parts, the Kiosk can display the appropriate menu for the current time of day.
Day Parts also control the Kiosk's open/closed state. If the current time falls outside the configured Day Part hours, the Kiosk may display a closed message and prevent customers from navigating the menu or placing an order.
Important
Bite has access to modify Day Parts.
However, changing the Day Parts does not change the store's Open Hours or the hours used by the ordering integration.
Open Hours
Open Hours serve a different purpose from Day Parts.
Open Hours determine whether an order can be validated and processed based on the store's operating hours.
For example, a Kiosk could be configured to remain available 24/7 through its Day Parts. However, if the store's Open Hours indicate that the kitchen is closed at a particular time, an order may still be rejected during checkout.
In this situation, the customer may see a message such as:
"The kitchen is closed."
This means that the Kiosk itself may still be accessible, but the ordering system will not allow the order to be processed because the store is outside its configured Open Hours.
Key distinction
Day Parts = Kiosk availability and menu schedule
Open Hours = Order validation and processing
Changing one does not automatically change the other.
Day Parts vs. Open Hours
| Configuration | Purpose | Controls |
|---|---|---|
| Day Parts | Controls Kiosk availability and time-based menu behavior | Whether the Kiosk is open/closed and which menu is displayed |
| Open Hours | Controls order validation | Whether an order can be processed |
| Sync Open Hours From Google | Automatically maintains Open Hours | Synchronizes Open Hours using the hours configured in Google |
Open Hours and POS Integrations
The system responsible for Open Hours depends on the site's integration.
OLO-Integrated Sites
For sites that integrate with OLO, Open Hours are controlled by OLO.
Bite and OLO have different responsibilities:
- Day Parts are controlled in Bite Admin.
- Open Hours are controlled by OLO.
- Bite cannot manually override the Open Hours controlled by OLO.
- Changing Day Parts does not change the Open Hours configured in OLO.
For example, a Kiosk may have a Day Part configured from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making the Kiosk available during that period.
However, if OLO's Open Hours indicate that the store is closed at 9:00 PM, an order placed at that time will not be processed.
The customer may see a message such as:
"The kitchen is closed."
In this scenario, modifying the Day Parts will not resolve the Open Hours issue. The Open Hours must be reviewed in OLO.
Important
For OLO-integrated sites, do not attempt to use Day Parts as a workaround for incorrect Open Hours.
Day Parts control the Kiosk experience; OLO Open Hours control whether the order can be processed.
Non-OLO Sites
For sites that do not integrate with OLO, Open Hours may be configurable through Bite Admin, depending on the channel configuration.
Before making a manual change, verify whether the channel has Sync Open Hours From Google enabled.
Sync Open Hours From Google
Bite Admin includes a Sync Open Hours From Google setting.
When this setting is enabled, the channel's Open Hours are automatically synchronized using the hours configured in Google.
Because the Open Hours are synchronized automatically, manual changes to the Open Hours configuration in Bite Admin cannot be used as an override.
Important behavior
When Sync Open Hours From Google is enabled:
- Open Hours are automatically updated from Google.
- Manual changes in Bite Admin cannot be used to override the synchronized schedule.
- If the Open Hours appear incorrect, the hours configured in Google should be verified.
- This setting does not affect channels that synchronize Open Hours directly from the POS.
Example
If the business hours configured in Google are:
- Monday–Friday: 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM
- Saturday–Sunday: 8:00 AM – 11:00 PM
and Sync Open Hours From Google is enabled, the channel's Open Hours will be synchronized using those hours.
If the Kiosk is configured through Day Parts to remain available outside those hours, that does not necessarily mean customers will be able to place orders. The Open Hours used for order validation must also allow ordering during that period.
Configuration Summary
| Site / Configuration | Day Parts | Open Hours |
| OLO-integrated site | Controlled in Bite | Controlled by OLO |
| Non-OLO site | Controlled in Bite | May be configurable in Bite, depending on channel configuration |
| Sync Open Hours From Google enabled | Controlled in Bite | Automatically synchronized from Google |
| POS Open Hours synchronization | Controlled in Bite | Synchronized from the POS |
Key Rule
Before attempting to modify Open Hours, always identify which system controls the Open Hours for the site.
Troubleshooting
Scenario 1: The Kiosk displays a closed message
If the Kiosk is showing a closed message or customers cannot navigate the menu:
Check Day Parts
Verify:
- The current day is included in the Day Part.
- The current time falls within the configured Day Part.
- The expected menu is assigned to the appropriate Day Part.
If the current time falls outside the configured Day Part, the Kiosk may remain unavailable even if the store's Open Hours indicate that the store is open.
Scenario 2: The Kiosk is accessible, but the customer cannot place an order
If the Kiosk is available and the customer can navigate the menu, but the order cannot be submitted:
Check Open Hours
Verify:
- The current time falls within the applicable Open Hours.
- The system controlling Open Hours considers the store open.
- The site's integration is not preventing order processing.
A message such as "The kitchen is closed" may indicate that the order is being rejected because the current time is outside the applicable Open Hours.
Scenario 3: The site uses OLO
If the site integrates with OLO:
- Verify the Day Parts in Bite.
- Verify the Open Hours in OLO.
- Confirm whether OLO considers the store open during the affected time.
- Do not attempt to resolve an OLO Open Hours issue by changing Day Parts.
Remember:
Day Parts are controlled by Bite. Open Hours are controlled by OLO.
Scenario 4: Open Hours cannot be manually changed
If Open Hours cannot be manually modified in Bite:
- Check whether Sync Open Hours From Google is enabled.
- If enabled, verify the business hours configured in Google.
- If the site integrates with OLO, verify the Open Hours in OLO instead.
- If the channel synchronizes Open Hours from the POS, verify the schedule in the POS.
Common Misconceptions
"If the Kiosk is open, customers should be able to order."
Not necessarily.
The Kiosk can be available based on its Day Parts while the store is considered closed for order processing based on its Open Hours.
"Changing the Day Parts will change the Open Hours."
No.
Day Parts and Open Hours are separate configurations.
Changing the Day Parts does not change the Open Hours used for order validation.
"We can manually change Open Hours in Bite."
This depends on the site's configuration.
- OLO sites: Open Hours are controlled by OLO.
- Sites with Google synchronization enabled: Open Hours are synchronized from Google.
- Sites syncing Open Hours from the POS: Open Hours are controlled by the POS.
- Other non-OLO configurations: Open Hours may be configurable in Bite.
Quick Reference
Day Parts
- Controlled in Bite Admin.
- Determine the Kiosk's open/closed state.
- Determine which menu is displayed based on the time of day.
- Can be modified in Bite.
Open Hours
- Determine whether an order can be validated and processed.
- Are controlled by the system responsible for the site's ordering availability.
- For OLO-integrated sites, Open Hours are controlled by OLO.
- For other sites, Open Hours may be controlled by Bite, Google, or the POS depending on the configuration.
Sync Open Hours From Google
- Automatically synchronizes Open Hours using the hours configured in Google.
- Prevents manual Open Hours changes from being used as an override.
- Does not apply to channels that sync Open Hours from the POS.
Key Takeaway
Day Parts control the Kiosk experience. Open Hours control order processing.
For OLO-integrated sites, Day Parts are managed in Bite, while Open Hours are controlled by OLO. Therefore, changing Day Parts will not change or override the Open Hours used by OLO.
When troubleshooting a time-based ordering issue, always determine whether the problem is related to Kiosk availability (Day Parts) or order processing (Open Hours) before making configuration changes.
